There Is Magic In The Night When Pumpkins Glow By Moonlight.

Leaving Ulverston I moved on to Grange Shop…what a fantastic window display!

Halloween themed…Dee has got it just right! I was there all morning and customer comments were brilliant!

The amount of tourists that make a visit to Grange Shop part of their holiday itinerary is astounding…I wouldn’t be surprised if they got a mention on Trip Advisor!

If you’ve visited our Grange Shop why not leave a comment…share your experience…

Sharing The Love…

Oh my goodness…I’ve just seen this year’s Christmas Puddings and they look amazing!

I kid you not…you are going to be jumping up and down with excitement when you see the new packaging…and that’s before you even taste a pudding!

Sharing the love for St Mary’s Hospice…there’s nothing more to say is there…what a beautiful message.

We have 3 sizes of traditional Christmas puds…gluten free Christmas puds…chocolate and sticky toffee pudding too…find them in our shops from early October!

Happiness is…

I know…I’ve been talking a lot about volunteering lately…but it’s something I’m passionate about…I love to hear volunteer stories when I’m out and about in the shops…

What made them volunteer? Why they chose St Mary’s Hospice? What volunteering means to them?

I’ve been on holiday this week and to help pass the time I’ve been doing a little reading around the subject of volunteering…I found an article on which highlighted an exerpt from Simple Changes, Big Rewards: A Practical, Easy Guide for Healthy, Happy Living, a special health report published by Harvard Health Publications…Volunteering: The happiness effect

‘…they found the more people volunteered, the happier they were, according to a study in Social Science and Medicine. Compared with people who never volunteered, the odds of being “very happy” rose 7% among those who volunteer monthly and 12% for people who volunteer every two to four weeks. Among weekly volunteers, 16% felt very happy’  ( you can access the full article, Volunteering and it’s surprising benefits at

Who doesn’t want to be happier? Why aren’t we all volunteering?

If you want to conduct your own research…and find out if volunteering makes you happier…why not volunteer in one of St Mary’s Hospice shops…see what happens!

Box Clever!

So you want to volunteer?

But you’re not sure what a volunteer looks like?

What skills they have?

What qualities they need?

How much time they have to give?

So many questions…enough to put you off even coming forward…what if you haven’t got what they want?

See these boxes…

…they’re all different sizes…shapes…colours…with different qualities and contents…but they’re all still boxes…useful boxes…boxes with potential!

Now do you see where I’m going with this (hope so 🤔)…volunteers…like our lovely boxes above…come in all varieties…all with something to offer…what you need to do is talk to us.

Don’t underestimate your value as a potential volunteer…we have so many different roles within our shops…warehouse and online business…there’s something for everyone…take that first step…chat to us online at Facebook…Retail at St Mary’s Hospice or call into any of our shops.

And Another Thing…

Something we were discussing yesterday in the car on the way to St Rocco’s Hospice was volunteer tasks and how they are evolving!

For example we have opportunities in some of our shops that bare little resemblance to accepted ‘charity shop volunteer’ roles…

  • eBay volunteer helping with post and packing, quality control, stock research
  • Kite books volunteer, scanning barcodes, checking quality of books and dvds, post and packaging

We will always need shop volunteers…those wonderful individuals that are at home behind the till…on the shop floor…or sorting and pricing stock…but a charity shop now has many layers to its operation…we’re constantly developing…thinking of new ways to bring income in for our amazing Hospice…and therefore the volunteer opportunities are also growing and developing…its a great time to become a volunteer!

All Together Now…

all_together_now_roka For the last few years St Mary’s Hospice shops have had individual shop Facebook pages where they have connected with customers and promoted their shop…so many pages got a little confusing and for those supporters that wanted to know what was happening in different shops it was rather time consuming!

We want to make following our shops online as easy as possible therefore we have merged all of our pages into…Retail At St Mary’s Hospice.

Welcome followers of Dalton Hospice Shop we’re really pleased to have you on board…we hope you enjoy the extra content you will find on the retail page.

St Mary’s Hospice Furniture Warehouse supporters welcome to you too…we’re really looking forward to getting to know you.

On the retail Facebook page you will find posts from Barrow shop, Grange, Millom, Ulverston, Dalton and the warehouse. We will also keep you up to date with what is happening in our Gift shop, eBay shop and of course our new Facebook shop…plenty to keep you interested.

We’d love for you to leave your comments…ask questions…make suggestions…get involved…after all we couldn’t do any of this without you!
